Over is an app that lets you add stunning artwork and beautiful typography to any photo. It was launched for iPhone and iPad a little over two years ago and finally it’s available on Android. While its functions don’t sound too exciting, using the app for a few minutes leaves you beyond impressed. You get a couple of good looking fonts bundled with the app ranging from classic to straight up funky. The same goes for the artwork. The built-in glyphs and stickers are nice but when you hit the Over marketplace it starts to get really good. Most of…

There are a lot of to-do list/task management apps out there. A lot. Most of them are really good and some of them live in the folder called “Productivity 2” on the on my iPhone. Logic dictates that there shouldn’t be any more right? But what’s logic got to do with getting things done? The reason why so many great list/note taking apps like UpWord, Zippy, Wunderlist, Clear, Simplenote etc live on our iPhones is that when it comes to to-do apps one size just doesn’t fit all. And what’s worse, you’ll have to go through at least half a…

While iOS and Mac have the excellent journaling app, Day One, Android, well, doesn’t. There’s been chatter about an Android version from the developers of Day One but nothing has materailized as of now. Android finally gets a really good Journalling app with Journey. On first look Journey looks similar to Day One but that’s not giving the app enough credit. Journey gets the basics right. There’s sync (using Google Drive), location tagging, photos and music data import, tagging, passcode lock, reminders, exporting and even basic Markdown support. Unfortunately not MultiMarkdown so if you’re like Shawn Blanc but on Android…

Last month, when Mikhail wrote about The News for iPhone, I sighed with relief. Sites like Hacker News, Designer News and Product Hunt are great places to find interesting things to read in the morning. And The News finally made it easy to do so on the iPhone. But I don’t just read them on my iPhone. These sites are also pinned to my Safari start page. I wasn’t actively looking for better a solution on the desktop as I was used to opening the sites in different browser tabs. Unlike the iPhone, the experience on desktop was just fine.…

If you’re anything like me, your iPhone is filled with hundreds of photos (more backed up off site, preferably not with PhotoStream), but not that many videos, one or two perhaps. This is a universal issue that people like Wally Cherwinski are trying to fix. Years of dealing with shitty cameras with low memory and complicated video editing suites has made us believe that video is just hard. With the cameras in the iPhone (especially the 5s) and the plethora of apps on the App Store, that’s just not true anymore. If you still hold this belief (which, I admit,…

Android tells you how long the phone’s screen was turned on, how long were the apps active and the battery they consumed. All of this combined gives you a good sense as to how long you actually spent looking at your phone. While detailed app based battery stats are coming to iOS 8, it’s still not enough. There is no straightforward way of finding out how long you spend looking at phone. Because of this, it is quite easy to overdo it; to get addicted to this tiny window to the wonders of the “interwebs”. If you find yourself constantly…
