I joined App.net in September. For those who don’t know (Shame on you), App.net is a paid ad-free social network where you control your data. Since I have joined the network, the quality of apps I have seen come up for it is mind blowing. While many people still consider App.net a paid version of twitter and some apps basically replicate that, I have seen it become much more than that. As much as I would like to have twitter back the way it was, the company and most of the users are stopping that. After joining I have used…

The App Store is full of great cooking apps. Most of them are interactive recipes with some videos or recipe book apps that let you enter your own material. While most apps or even cookbooks in general take you from recipe to ingredients, Sarah Jenkins’ New Italian Pantry goes the other way around. You start with stocking your pantry with 16 core ingredients chosen by Sarah Jenkins and depending on what you have available you are shown recipes from the apps list of 95 recipes. New Italian Pantry is an impressive cooking app for your iPad. Sarah Jenkins is all…
It is always great to see developers do innovative things with iOS devices for games. Pacific Helm makes you replace your box of checkers with an iPad and now Kater Calling wants you to replace your deck of cards with an iOS app. Bold Poker isn’t your basic poker app on the App Store. It is a brilliant new take on Texas hold ’em involving multiple iOS devices over wifi. Don’t expect online multiplayer and such here. Bold poker just replaces your deck of cards with iOS devices. The visuals of the cards are absolutely stunning and they look beyond…
We’ve started featuring a lot more games than we used to here on Beautiful Pixels. This is partly because the quality of indie games is higher than ever before. Most indie games usually have great and unique visuals. Until a few months ago, I never considered the PlayStation 3 or PSVita important for anything but classics and your typical Call Of Duty-esque shooter with a few more boring games. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Xbox Live Arcade had some of the best games ever. Things have changed. With more and more developers moving away from Microsoft’s Xbox exclusivity, other platforms have…
Semi Secret Software who brought us Canabalt have released a new game for iOS called Hundreds. It is an insanely addictive puzzle game with stunning visuals and amazing sounds. I have been awaiting its release ever since I saw Polygon do a hands on back in October. Hundreds has a very minimalist visual style and red theme throughout. It looks absolutely gorgeous on the iPad with Retina display. Another thing you will notice with great indie developers is the effort put into the in game sounds and music. Hundreds doesn’t have an over the top soundtrack but the sounds are…
I was extremely late to the Google Reader & the whole RSS party. I never really bothered with it until I used Reeder on my iPhone a few months ago, and then ended up getting Reeder for iPad and Mac that day. I start my day with a cup of coffee and whichever device is nearest to me with a Google Reader app on it. When I got my Nexus 7, I was disappointed with the official Google Reader app and any third party alternatives. Press by TwentyFive Squares changes all that. Android has been becoming more and more beautiful…
