Aelios is a absolutely gorgeous app for iPad that allows you to explore the weather forecasts of cities and towns around the globe in a whole new way. It utilizes the the iPad’s glorious screen estate to put the forecasts right under your fingertips and offers a user experience that’s an addictive joy in itself.
A product from the team at Jilion, better known for their remarkable work with SublimeVideo, Aelios features a 24-hour virtual watch in the center of the screen with a magnifying glass smack in the middle of it. This is laid against a backdrop of a satellite view of the glove. As you move the background, the magnifying glass positions and highlights the nearest city and displays the weather forecasts for today and the next 24 hours. Moving from one city to the other is as easy as moving your finger towards it.
The design of Aelios is delicious and it’s quite fun to use the app. The virtual watch is smart enough to display which hours will have night-time and which hours will be day. Different icons portray if it’s gonna be rainy, cloudy or sunny. I should mention, these animated icons by themselves are very well done. Other notable features of the app include the ability to mark you favorite cities, one-touch weather using geo-location, support for metric or imperial units and additional data like wind speed, direction, precipitation level along with forecasts for the next 7 days.
There’s no doubt that the Jilion team has taken pride in carefully crafting the pixels that have gone into Aelios. At just $4.99 on the App Store, the app gives you a strong feature set and a bunch beautiful pixels to use it. Go ahead, grab it from the App Store if you haven’t already done this.
