Vert is a beautifully crafted unit conversion app for iPhone that quickly managed to blow me away with its simplicity. The App Store is already filled with dozens of different unit converters, some of which we’ve written about here on Beautiful Pixels. Yet when I first laid my eyes on Vert, I was instantly hooked.
Vert’s most notable thing is how spiffy and quick it is. Taps, swipes and transitions happen quickly and you are taken to the screen you want to go to, in no time. The units available for conversion in Vert are neatly categorized, so it’s easy to find what you’re looking for. Apart from your usual suspects, Vert also has categories like Shirts & Blouses, Radioactivity, Typography, etc. The main screen lists all the categories in a long list, or you can jump straight to the one you want by using the search field at the top. Tapping on a category takes you to the units’ listing under it. Here, you are presented with a simple keypad at the bottom with two columns of units at the top. You can scroll the units vertically to set the ‘to’ & ‘from’ units easily. You can also change the direction of the conversion arrow by tapping on either side of it. However, I’d have hoped this screen had the ability to search for a specific unit as well, especially under the ‘Currency’ category. You can dismiss the keypad by swiping down so you have more screen estate.
You can mark a select few categories and units as favorite by double-tapping on it, so it marks the ‘star’ next to it. This helps narrow down the list when you’re on the conversion screen. Simply enable the “★” key on the keypad so that only your favorites are visible. This is insanely helpful, for example, in the Currency listing when you only want to convert to/from your favorite currencies.
You can swipe left of the category screen to view the app’s Settings. Vert offers 12 different themes that you can choose from to change the look of the app. One lovely feature of Vert is the ability to set a default country in the Settings. With this feature, whenever you are in a different country, Vert uses your location to automatically set the proper units for you.
Vert currently supports over 700 units spread over 30 categories and will soon add support for compound units (foot+inch, mtrs+cm, etc). Vert also supports current currency conversions rates by automatically updating the exchange rates when you’re connected to the internet. Vert is a fantastic unit convertor for iPhone that is available on the App Store for just $0.99 and comes with all themes unlocked.
