There are several apps available on the App Store that deliver the news to you every day. A majority of these news apps also offer a customized reading experience so that you can actually enjoy reading the news on your phone. A select few of the apps also offer a unique feature along with the core reading experience, such as Timeline, BuzzFeed News or the now defunct Circa. Late last year, I happened to download ‘Wildcard‘ from the App Store after Khoi Vinh had tweeted about it. I download and played around with the app and also quickly forgot about it. Last month, Wildcard was updated to Version 2.0, essentially a complete reintroduction that brought along a news feed, collections and personalized content to the app. I’ve been playing with the app since the 2.0 update landed on July 30th and it is undoubtedly one of the most delightful reading experiences I’ve come across.
Wildcard is an iPhone app that brings you daily bits of news & entertainment. It offers a thoroughly delightful experience and using the app to browse or actually read the content is an absolute joy. Wildcard uses a card based UI, so it make it very easy to quickly skim through the daily content. Every topic is contained within a card and tapping on it reveals additional cards and content, so that you can dive in deeper into a certain topic. It even works with your Twitter account to bring you a more personalized experience and delivers notifications when there are major developments around stories that you’ve read in the app.
All the content in Wildcard is curated by a team of Editors, so there’s rarely any trash you’ll come across.
The team at Coopkanics has done a remarkable job with the UX of Wildcard. The way the cards scroll as you flick through the time is stellar. Each card is its own entity. The use of halftones instead of blurring in the app succeeds in offering a truly delightful & unique experience to the user. Here’s a quick video that’ll give you an idea of what I’m talking about.
Wildcard is available for Free on the App Store and I highly recommend you check it out.
