While you guys were busy watching the Wimbledon Final, we’ve been busy preparing & dressing up this week’s Platter ready to be served to you. As usual, we have some fresh new pixels from some wonderful new apps (and two games) all set for you, so let’s not waste any time and take a look at what we have in store.
Veggie Weekend
Veggie Weekend is another beautifully designed app from the folks at Filibaba. Just like their previous apps, Veggie Weekend brings mouth-watering photos & delicious recipes of vegan & vegetarian items. You can choose from 18 different recipes that come bundled with the app or get access to more recipes via additional 'Recipe Packs', each available via a 99 cent IAP. There are 3 packs available right now and the company plans to add more soon. You can download Veggie Weekend Free from the App Store.
Swipes
Swipes is a really cool dark-themed task management app for the iPhone. The app is heavily inspired by Mailbox, relying on gestures to take actions on each task. Swiping right on a task marks it as done while swiping left lets you reschedule it via a grid, much like in Mailbox. You can add tags to each task and then filter them easily. Rearranging the tasks in the list is as easy as tapping and holding down on one. The easy scheduling in the app makes it very easy to manage your tasks. Swipes is Free on the App Store.
Dscvry
Dscvry is essentially an alternate Instagram app for your iPhone. It offers a whole new way of consuming your Instagram feed by putting a focus on the actual photos being shared. Unlike the official app, Dscvry shows you a continuous stream of photos without any avatars, titles, likes or comments. Tapping on a photo reveals the meta data and lets you like or comment on the phto. The Popular tab at the bottom toggles between the popular photos on Instagram and the popular photos in your feed. Similarly, the Location/Search at the bottom toggles between Photos Near, Locations Near & 'Search Tags'. Dscvry has a dark theme and looks great. It's Free for a limited on the App Store.
Windows of New York
Windows of New York is a wonderful project by José Guízar, a graphic designer living in this wonderful city on the east coast. The project exhibits José's illustrations of some curious windows that manage to catch his keen eye while he travels through the city. It's a beautiful collection of illustrations and a good way to spend some time. [via @thrax]
Limbo for iOS
Limbo, which was the first game to be featured here on Beautiful Pixels, is a beautiful, dark and atmospheric game that easily manages to keep you engrossed for hours. It is one of those games that you absolutely have to experience in some form. Having been available for the major platforms, Limbo finally made its way to iOS recently. The controls for the game have been redone for touch and they work brilliantly. You tap and hold to move stuff around and can otherwise move around by swiping. The game feels amazing on the iPad and it is even available for the iPhone (4S and above) and iPod Touch (5th generation only). It also features iCloud save sync that is insanely useful and it works well. Limbo is available on the App Store for $4.99.
Bold Poker 2.0
Bold Poker is an amazing way to play Texas Hold Em Poker that uses your iOS devices instead of a pack of cards. Until a few days ago, everyone playing had to own the paid version of Bold Poker and connect over a local network as mentioned in our review. The game just hit 2.0 and it brings a better way to play the game with more people. Now only one person (the dealer) needs to own the paid version and everyone playing can download the free version. Bold Poker Player is available for free on the App Store and finally Google Play. The paid version has gone up in price and is now $14.99 at 40% off until the 14th of July.
Rates
Rates is a very nice and elegant currency converter for your iPhone. It has great folding animations and makes it easy to convert into multiple currencies. After enabling the currencies you want visible, tap on any currency to edit the value and the others automatically change. It feels and works like a properly designed currency conversion app unlike the others and even lets you perform calculations as you type. There’s a ‘Calculator’ link in the sidebar that’s just a link to the developer’s other app on the App Store, which confused us a bit. Rates is available on the App Store for $0.99.
