Wild Textures
This is great collection of free textures/backgrounds. These are seriously high quality, and we couldn’t believe that they’re free. From Black Llama Coat (because who doesn’t want that silky, black goodness for a background?) to Rose Leather texture, there’s something for the connoisseur in us all. We’d strongly urge you to use the website’s Donate button, if you like their work. Good craft deserves rewarding.
Louisville Infographic
If you like making infographics, or are just an appreciator of good art, we recommend you check out this website. The focus is, as the name suggests, on the city of Louisville, Kentucky , and a promotion by City Collaborative , “an innovative group deeply passionate about Louisville, Ky, with a mission to execute on ideas quickly to generate positive transformation throughout the community”. There are some really fascinating facts and statistics for you to peruse, all wrapped up in a tasteful site. We loved the design and presentation of the website, and thought we’d share it with you.
Captain Icon
An amazing collection of over 350 vector icons, this site is a veritable treasure trove. The icons themselves are sorted into several categories, the better to help you find the one you’re looking for, and are available in a range of formats. The best part is, since they are vector designs, they can be scaled up or down without any loss in quality. These icons can also be customised to adhere to any design motif you’re trying to implement, thanks to the fact that they can be rendered beautifully in a huge array of colours. All these icons are available for free, but you could (and should) donate to Mario, so that he continue to come up with ideas and designs like this one.
Responsive Design: Getting Advanced Filtering Right
This great Medium post by Mikkel Bo Schmidt talks about the challenges faced by web designers who create responsive websites that implement filters. The challenge, as with any instance of responsive web design, is to implement a feature that is fully functional and looks good without being restricted by screen real estate. Using an example of Tradeshift, an app he developed, Mikkel highlights the design decisions that went into implementing good filtering techniques that look and work equally well on both a desktop, and a phone. He highlights that the ideas came to them specifically because they designed the mobile view first. It makes for great reading.
Webhook
Here’s an idea for a service that begs the question: Why didn’t I think of that? Webhook is envisaged to be the easiest way to develop a custom CMS for your website. The idea behind it is that even a newbie should be able to properly design and customise his/her website without the need to spend hours and hours coding on their computers. Webhook wants to take the CMS experience mobile as well, so you can basically edit CMS on the fly. All you need is a basic idea of HTML and CSS, and you’re all set. Webhook is currently on Kickstarter and has already been backed. With just over two weeks left you’d best get right on pledging. A pledge of $20 will give you early access for a month, and lock you in to Kickstarter monthly pricing once the project gets off the ground. If you’re into website design, you don’t want to miss this.
