Over There 2 is a lovely little location-sharing app for iPhone, built by the same team who brought us Simply North. Over There 2’s most notable feature is that it even works offline, so you don’t have to have internet access to use the app.
Over There 2 pulls all the information its needs from the GPS signal that your phone receives and presents it in a beautiful UI. The main screen has a circular view in the center that displays the map layout and your current location. On the top, it displays the GPS accuracy, current speed and elevation as well as your current time and the time zone you are in. The app also generates a URL (such as http://ovt.re/j26ZQQv62RQG) using a smart algorithm that you can share with anyone and which, once accessed, shows your exact location on a map. The URL isn’t a shortener though, it actually is an encoded form of your location. The URL is generated by the app even when you don’t have data coverage, so no data actually leaves the app. There are three buttons at the bottom of the main screen that let you Copy, Share or Add the current location.
I love the visual design of the app and also the fact that there are interface sounds. The overall look and experience of the app is just fantastic. Using the app, you can easily share your current location with anyone using SMS, Email, Twitter or other usual means of communication. Alternatively, it also acts as a great tool to know about your current location when you are wandering about. I wish I had this app during my trip to Ladakh.
Over There 2 is available for $1.99 on the App Store and I’d definitely recommend it if you travel a lot. However, I can’t figure out why the devs decided to call it ‘Over There’ and not ‘Over Here’, since the app only works with your current location and doesn’t let you pick a location manually. If you’re sharing your location with someone, you’d just say “I’m over here!”
