We’re back this week with another, all new set of apps on the Platter. We’ve been receiving some great feedback about this series and we’ve been implementing the top suggestions into the new design for BP that we’ve begun working on. It’s still a couple of months away, so let’s instead check out the apps this week:
Meet the Ipsums
Meet the Ipsums is a lovely little project by Tim Holman and Claudio Guglieri that brings toghether all the "Lorem Ipsum" speciality projects and presents them through a very beautifully crafted website and great typography. There's a long list of these projects and I was able to find some really interesting ones there. I've begun work on the new design for Beautiful Pixels and I know exactly what I'm going to use for that.
Highland — The Screenplay Utility for Mac
Highland is a smart screenplay utility available for OS X that looks to be an immensely useful tool for anyone working with scripts and screenplays. Highland is designed to work with three different file formats — Fountain (its native format), FDX (the popular Final Draft format) and PDF (when you share it with someone). Highland behaves like a normal script writing app, where you can create a new document and start writing. Somewhat similar to Markdown, Highland files are text files that are formatted using spacing and capitalization. Highland is also capable of importing FDX or PDF files and creating a new, editable document from them. So no matter where the script originated, you can almost always work with it in Highland. It's just $19.99 on the Mac App Store.
Lasso Photos
Lasso is a beautiful iPhone app that makes it very easy to keep in touch with friends and family. It offers a super-easy way to send a bunch of photos to someone or request new photos from someone with just a single swipe. Your contacts show up in a simple list with their avatar and name. Sending a photo to someone is as simple as swiping to the right. You can either choose multiple photos from the Camera Roll or click a fresh one from the Camera. Similarly, swiping to the left requests photos from that contact. Lasso will send you a notification when someone has sent or requested photo. The interface is nice & colorful and goes well with the overall feel of the app. There are visual cues to help you through the app, which makes the app very easy to use. Even my granny got used to it right away. Lasso Photos is Free on the App Store.
Moon — Current Moon Phase
There are several moon phase apps on the App Store, but we liked this one for its simplicity. It's one of the "Does one thing, but does it well" kind of apps. Moon CMP puts the moon dead center on your screen. It looks stunning on the Retina Screen. Swiping it aside reveals stats about the time left for New Moon, and Full Moon as well as how much percent the current moon is into its cycle. You can grab the Universal App for $0.99 on the App Store.
Gadget Flow
Gadget Flow is a Universal iOS app that works as a buying guide for anyone who's interested in interesting products. The app works in addition to the website and offers a collection of over 1500 items in the showcase. The app lists all the information related to the item including photos, price and the 'Buy Now' button. A basement menu on the left lists all the categories along with the 'Latest' and 'Popular' items. Gadget Flow is Free on the App Store.
Word Vault
Word Vault is a dictionary app for iPhone that also helps you remember and learn the words that you've looked up. Like a simple dictionary app, Word Vault lets you look up words and it quickly gives you the meaning for each. The app has offline access for over 150,000 words are more if you're online. But the other major feature of the app is that it lets you recall and learn the words by making you guess and type out the word from meanings every day. You can set the interval at which it reminds you. Word Vault has full VoiceOver support and costs $4.99 on the App Store.
