Instapaper Resumes Service in EU and Relaunches Premium Subscription

Instapaper, the insanely popular and feature-rich “read later” service has today announced that it is relaunching its ‘Premium’ offering. The service was created by Marco Arment around 10 years ago and he sold it to Betaworks before it was later acquired by Pinterest in 2016. However, as GDPR came into effect a few months ago, the service went completely dark for users in the European Union and there was no clear communication from the company when it would be back.

Surprisingly enough, Instapaper announced last month that it was going independent and would now be “owned and operated by the same people who’ve been working on Instapaper since it was sold to Betaworks by Marco Arment in 2013”.

Today, Instapaper is relaunching its ‘Premium‘ offering at $2.99/month or $29.99/year and is also resuming service to users in the European Union.

Over the past two months we have taken a number of actions to address the General Data Protection Regulation, and we are happy to announce our return to the European Union.

We are very sorry for the extended downtime and, as a token of our apology, we are giving six months of Instapaper Premium to all EU users affected by the outage.

Unfortunately for Instapaper, users who were left out in the dark don’t seem to be pleased in the comments.

Pinterest Acquires Instapaper from Betaworks

Instapaper — one the two popular read-it-later services today has today announced that it has been acquired by Pinterest. Betaworks bought Instapaper from Marco Arment about three years ago and since then, the team has added a bunch of improvements and polish to the app. Post acquisition, the Instapaper team will be moving to Pinterest’s HQ in San Francisco from their current base in New York.

Although Pinterest says that Instapaper will continue to be a separate app, the company is announcing that it will be shutting down Instaparser — their text parsing tool for developers.

As we focus on the future of the user experience, we’ll be sunsetting our developer product, Instaparser. Starting today, we will cease signups for Instaparser and halt billing for existing customers. In order to ensure a smooth transition for current users, we will keep Instaparser running until November 1, 2016.

Instapaper is one of the oldest and best apps on the App Store. Even after Marco sold it, the app has been continuously receiving great updates and becoming better overall.
