The App Store has seen plenty of “journal” apps by now, a few of which have even been featured here on Beautiful Pixels. So when I was sent a link to Roller Journal, I wasn’t too keen on checking it out. But then, a couple of my close friends recommended the app to me at different times, so I had to check it out. I’m so glad I did. Roller Journal isn’t your regular journaling app. It takes a new, a different approach to this practice. Instead of making you write your thoughts, Roller Journal asks you interesting and fun…

Here’s another fun little app for your iPhone that has very little practical use, but you’ll find yourself playing with it numerous times. Soundbeam is a beautiful app by Evil Window Dog, a two person indie studio in Greece. Essentially, Soundbeam is an oscilloscope for your iPhone. The app’s design matches exactly that of a real world oscilloscope, right down to the buttons and the input plug. Soundbeam listens to sounds around the device and plots them neatly into waveforms. It’s fascinating to see how different sounds take different waveforms in the app and you can even toggle between linear…
Instapaper on iOS is a tremendously popular app, with the service having a large share of loyal users and its own set of fan following and die-hard supporters. In spite of alternative services like Read It Later and Readability being available on the App Store, Instapaper has continued to grow and Marco continues to improve the app — with the latest release bringing Retina images for the new iPad and six new beautiful fonts. A few months ago, Marco wrote about the reason for the lack of an Android client on his blog, referencing this post by Shifty Jelly, and…
Even though a Google’s AdSense ads are generally considered to be ugly and intrusive, there’s a large number of people using them on their websites. It continues to generate a fair bit of revenue for publishers and Google offers plenty of easy options to add the code to their sites. Designed and developed by the Greek trio of @titanas, @kalevgr and @nicktoumpelis (the former two also being in the trio who brought us Analytiks app for Google Analytiks),…
Oh, hey look! It’s a website with my favorite kind of interaction — Parallax scrolling. And it sure doesn’t disappoint. UI Designer Matt Dempsey has crafted a beautiful interaction experience on his site, Inception Explained. As the name suggests, it’s a site that attempts to explain Inception (The Movie) and the different levels in it. If you’ve seen the movie, you’d know that watching it just once is not enough. The site makes fantastic use of parallax scrolling and simple to understand text & elements to explain Inception. I’m sorry, I cannot do it any justice trying to explain the…
There’s no doubt that CSS has evolved extensively over the last few years. There are some great examples of beautifully designed websites all over the web, most which make ingenious use of CSS code to get the desired effect and result. While there are thousands of CSS tutorials that you’ll come across, this one by Sergio Camalich specifically caught my eye since it talks about creating & styling CSS buttons with Pseudo elements. The HTML code only uses a single anchor tag for each button, rest all is done via CSS. It’s pretty cool too see what a few lines…
