Ah, music apps. Advances in hardware and software have created an environment where cellphones, tablets and computers can replace even the most specialised of equipment. For the die hard, nothing defines a great song like an amazing solo. Increasingly, however, you have people coming up with stuff like this, and you begin to appreciate what a great time it is to be alive. We have reviewed Beatwave before and here’s another one to get you jamming.
Keezy Drummer is a great way to play a tune for those who can’t tell the difference between a cymbal and a tom-tom, as well as for those who live and breath percussion instruments. A delightfully minimalistic app, Keezy Drummer features great design and ease of use in a completely free package. Although we feel the designers went a bit too far with the minimalism (there isn’t even a tutorial to help you get started), the app really is of the pick-up-and-play variety. Even someone as tone-deaf as I am can get started in less than 30 seconds. Sure, it sounds terrible, and it isn’t as easy as they make it look, but I’m sure the connoisseurs among us will be able to hit the ground running with this app.
The app hands you two drum tracks ready to go, with each track represented by a circle. A simple beat comes preloaded, and all you need to do to start is press Play. From the same screen, you can adjust the tempo and add new tacks (the app comes with 12 instruments built-in). Tap any circle, and interface for adding your beats, a 4 x 4 grid of circles that the player cycles through, comes front and center. All you need to do to add your own touch is tap a single circle or drag your finger across a row or column, and you’re all set. Up to nine concurrent, fully cusomizable tracks can be played. The app keeps looping your tune, but my absolute favourite feature is that it continues to do so even if the app is in the background. What this means is that you can play a song in the Music app or Spotify, then go into Keezy Drummer and add your own touch.
Unfortunately, that’s about it. There’s no way to save tracks, so the app is very limited. Still, if you’re looking for a casual way to liven up a dull track, or if you’re actually serious and want to jam with your friends, Keezy Drummer is a great way to get started. It’s available for Free on the App Store.
