FiftyThree’s Paper — one of our most favorite and highly recommended iPad apps has made it way to the iPhone today. Ever since its debut in 2012, Paper has grown at a remarkable pace, adding lots of features over the last 3+ years. With today’s release, Paper goes from a mere sketching app for iPad to a Universal iOS app that allows anyone to quickly capture their ideas in the form of sketches, photos, notes, annotations, etc. FiftyThree has released a fantastic update to Paper in the form of Version 3.0 and there’s already so much to like about it.
The biggest change here is, of course, that Paper is now also available on the iPhone. When I first heard about this a few weeks ago, my first concern was how they would adapt to the smaller screen estate. But having used the app over the last couple of days, I am pretty impressed. Paper works just as well on the iPhone as it has on the iPad all these years. In fact, now that’s it’s always in your pocket or always with you, it’s much quicker and easier to capture your ideas when they hit you.
The update also brings a major organizational change to the app. Paper gets rid of the notebooks from the previous version and introduces Spaces. A Space in Paper is a collection of one or more paper sheets that hold your ideas. For example, you could create a space for an art project, one for your house renovation, etc. Each of these spaces can hold multiple ideas and have unique cover images.
Paper 3.0 allows you to capture your ideas in any form. You can sketch using all the tools that Paper provides, you can type something out and convert the text into lists or headings, or even take a photo of something, annotate and all of this stays inside a single space. You also have access to Think Kit, allowing you to quick create diagrams and shapes in the app. Of course, you can just as easily share your ideas with friends and colleagues. Since Paper allows you to follow other users, anything they have shared publicly from the app shows up in the app for you, under the ‘People You Follow’ public space.
Here’s a quick video that demonstrates the new UI and features in Paper 3.0.
