Wow, what a week this has been. Apple’s keynote at WWDC ’13 this past monday was full of mammoth announcements and we’re particularly excited about the direction they’re now taking iOS in. There’s tons of new stuff added to it and the new UI is barely scratching the surface of iOS 7. We aren’t getting into talking about the stock app icons because the Internet has already been through enough of that for now. We can’t wait to fully experience iOS 7 this fall but until then, let’s check out what we have on the Platter this week.
Pivo for iPhone
Pivo, developed by Sam Harman, is a nifty little utility for travelers. It shows you how to order beer in 59 different languages complete with correct spellings, phonetic pronunciations and even videos for many languages. The app is really nice and has a simple colour scheme throughout. You change languages by swiping through them and can swipe up at any time to see the text with pronunciation. Rotating your iPhone will play the video automatically. Pivo is available on the App Store for $0.99.
xPence Update
We featured xPence over a year ago and absolutely loved it. The app has always been unique in its great location based expense naming system and travel mode. It had been a while since its last update, but it hit version 2.0 last week bringing tons of new features along with a few changes. The app has been rewritten from the ground up and is optimized for the iPhone 5 screen. xPence now has the ability to add recurring expenses and even has a built in calculator. Your data can now be exported and there's a nice backup and restore setting as well. xPence is available on the App Store for $2.99.
Money by Jumsoft for iPad
For folks who didn't pickup the last MacHeist Nano Bundle, Money by Jumsoft is a suite of apps to take control of your financial life. We mentioned the MacHeist Bundle because Money was unlocked later. Now the iPad app for Money looks really great. It draws inspiration from Things for iPad by Cultured Code in quite a few places. It is the best looking finance app for iPad we have seen so far. The UI is clean and adding entries is very fast and simple. Money has a boatload of great features like foursquare integration for payees and multiple currency support. It’s only let down by its ancient wifi sync method while other similar suites have moved to Dropbox or a custom sync solution. Money is available on the App Store for only $4.99.
Mr Mood
Mr Mood is a really simple app for your iPhone that lets you register your current mood in the app. It has five different moods, ranging from happiest to sad and it uses these to keep track of how you’ve been every day since you started using the app. All you have to do is tell Mr Mood how you’ve been feeling today and it’ll remember it. Then, it shows you a nice chart plotted for days in the past and show you how you were on each day. It also calculates your average mood and tells you if you need a change in life. Mr Mood has a reminder option, so you don’t forget to set the mood. It uses bold colors in its UI and “just works”. It’s only $0.99 on the App Store.
Parkr
Parkr is an iOS app that’s gonna help you remember where you parked your car last. It’s got a map-dominated UI, putting buttons only where needed. It saves multiple locations with geocoded addresses and you can also add notes and photos to them. It lets you set reminders and also offers walking directions via Maps as well as sharing the location to Twitter & Facebook. It’s a Universal app and is $0.99 on the App Store. Go grab it.
Foursquare Time Machine
Foursquare, the king of checkins, has teamed up with Samsung to offer a fascinating look into your past Foursquare checkins on a map. Foursquare has built this “Time Machine” that takes you from your very first checkin on the service and plots the next ones as you move through the map. The whole view is beautifully done and the animations are wonderful. If you have an account on Foursquare, be sure you check it out here.
Press 1.3 for Android
We absolutely love Press on Android and the app keeps getting more and more amazing with each update. Google Reader is going away on July 1st and most RSS apps that relied on it are moving to other services. Press 1.3 has a great new phone interface and has added support for two of the new popular services. Feed Wrangler by David Smith and FeedBin by Ben Ubois. Support for Feedly and Fever is coming in a future update. Press is an amazing app that has been crafted for modern Android devices. It is well worth it and is available on Google Play for $3.
iOS 7 Icon Template
Less than a week after Apple’s iOS 7 reveal, Rob Sim, a UI/UX designer has released this iOS 7 Icon Template, available free for the masses. If you work with iOS app icons, you might want to check it out here.
