I don’t know what to make of native dribbble apps for the iPhone. To me dribbble is a ‘website’ than something that goes in an app. 95% of the time I land on dribbble is via a link on twitter or a google search. Moreover the dribbble api doesn’t allow any searching (yet), so you’re stuck with the four limited feeds. But that’s just me. Probably tons of people who want to dribbble it up every morning, on the go, and just before bedtime. And for that, we have our third iPhone dribbble app, Swish, designed by Mathieu White and…

This should probably hit home. Justin O’beirne: For months, I’ve been trying to figure out why Google Maps’s city labels seem so much more readable than the labels on other mapping sites. To me, Google’s labels seem to “pop” much more than the other sites’ labels. Major cities also seem to stand out much more. And whenever you’re quickly scanning the maps, the label you’re searching for seems to stand out just a little sooner on Google’s maps. What follows is a terrific rundown of the careful visual enhancements the Google Maps team has put forth in their UI. Highly…

After promising a Mac client of their quite loved Weet for iPhone, the team that is Raptor Apps and Marfil delivered an early preview of what is to come. Marfil’s work is always appreciated. Although the custom toolbar raises questions about whether these custom UIs are welcome on the desktop (this one doesn’t even have an inactive state), it’s nice to look at. The toolbar itself is drop dead gorgeous, probably the defining aesthetic of this app. The custom scrollbar is nice, although a little too thick (can’t wait for scrollbars to be abandoned completely). The most important part of…

Reeder has been pretty much the definition of slick UI on the iPhone and iPad, and for the first time (for an iOS app), is available on the Mac. Early draft in many ways, but quite polished in others. There are still some weird things about its UI that I’d like to point out. The first thing you notice when you launch Reeder for Mac, is how different it looks from apps we’ve seen so far. It’s very iOS-like, and very what’s-going-to-be Lion-like. We’re of course basing this on an early preview of Lion, where UI styles might change. But amongst…

What is with me and custom tab bar styles? I just love em! They might be superficial and add no extra functionality, but if done right can be insanely pretty. Gift Plan from Glasshouse Apps (the guys who made Barista and The Early Edition) is an app finely tuned for a Christmas gift shopping experience — that practically begs for a superficial design. Personally I don’t know if you need a shopping app like this (as against having a text note or a calendar event), but let’s play along anyway — it is pretty pixels after all. It comes with…
